Research Method

A.Literature Review: It searches and generalizes the related information and pictures of history and performance characteristics of Kunqu Opera.
B.Interview: It interviews the experts and scholars to explore the sustainable operation of Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe on traditional Chinese opera.
C.Visit and learning: Observation and appreciation of the characteristics of Kunqu Opera, such as action, costumes, makeup, instrument, mask and properties.
D.Questionnaire survey: It investigates the public’s views and understanding of traditional Chinese opera.

Research motivation

Traditional Chinese opera has been important entertainment of life for local people in early times

Traditional Chinese opera combines culture and art of literature, singing, music, dance and fine arts and it not only integrates folk legends, folk region and performing art, but also is part of important leisure activities of people’s lives in early times. Watching Chinese operas was the childhood memory of many people in the past. It was usually the family time when the parents went to see the Chinese operas with children. In temple fair activities such as offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors, performance of Chinese operas was indispensable. In the flourishing period, it was the most common folk recreation and important local activity.

 

Declination of traditional Chinese opera was caused by 3C entertainment of technology

Traditional Chinese operas have been popular with local people. However, the prosperity could not be lasted and the main reason is in that in modern time, recreation becomes diverse and it is the era of e-technology and 3C. People’s methods, items and space of leisure activities thus change. People significantly become interested in movies, TV, concerts, plays and online media and it seriously influences the development of traditional Chinese opera. At present, the obstacles encountered by traditional Chinese operas are below: loss of audiences, shortage of professional actors, shortage of professional musicians, playwrights, directors and stage technical personnel and lack of performing opportunities which influence the actors’ livelihood, etc. Thus, operation of the troupes is more difficult. It results in serious crisis of heritage and development of traditional Chinese opera.

 

Constant innovation and change revive traditional Chinese opera

Since cultural art of traditional Chinese opera was in crisis, the insiders of Chinese opera circle began being aware. In the following decades, with constant reform and attempts, it reconstructs and packages the performance, music, script, costumes, stage properties, stage, marketing and promotion and results in refined production and performance of traditional Chinese opera in order to meet modern fashionable performance and the audiences’ interest. The original style of traditional Chinese opera should certainly be preserved.
