From the introduction of Beijing Opera and Kunqu opera in Taiwan during the period of Qing Dynasty, Chinese opera troupes were founded one after another and the performance around Taiwan was the recreation for families, friends and neighbors at the time. Nevertheless, with the economic growth in Taiwan, theaters, pubs, disco halls and KTV were successively launched. Beijing Opera and Kunqu opera were no longer the important public leisure activities. It resulted in serious impact on the market of traditional Chinese opera. Therefore, in order to promote traditional Chinese opera and arts, National Taiwan College of Performing Arts founded Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe. According to the director Ou Su-qiong, the main task of the troupe was to promote the education and introduction to the children. Thus, it cooperated with schools and communities with plans and held teachers’ workshops, children’s summer camps, club activities and residential programs in universities. It launched the lectures on campus and in the communities, introduced public and tour performance in the communities and proposed demonstration with curriculum design and performance. With the promotion of arts education in the communities and schools, it introduces the beauty of Kunqu opera to the public.

From the foundation in 1963, Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe has lasted for 50 or 60 years. According to the director, the troupe had experienced the hard time to promote the art at the beginning. However, it was not dismissed and the troupe continued the mission. With the efforts, the troupe members constantly made progress and actively approached the public in the communities and campus to attract the young audiences. After accomplishing the performance, the actors interacted with the audiences in order to enhance their interest. The director Ou emphasized that the troupe entertains the audiences and it intends to introduce the art to different regions in Taiwan. From performance, exhibitions to classes, it aims to result in traditional Chinese opera as part of the public entertainment and life. The ultimate goal is to integrate life, art and Chinese opera and thus, it becomes more approachable and original.
