Facial makeup is the facial painting on the actors of Chinese traditional opera and the makeup applied on the stage. Facial makeup of different categories can be various. Makeup of “male” and “female” characters are simple and they are called “handsome makeup”, “Su Mian” and “Jie Mian”. Makeup of “painted face (Jing)” and “clown” is more complicated. “Painted face” is particularly shown with paints and complicated patterns. Thus, it is called “painted face”. Facial makeup in the traditional opera refers to painted face of Jing. “Clown” is painted with a small white point on the nose and is called small painted face. Facial makeup of the actors on the stage highlights personalities, facial features and identities of the characters and it enhances the stage effect.
