Kunqu opera is one of the oldest and completely preserved dramas in the history of Chinese traditional opera. It combines music, drama, literature, dance and performance and is called “the origin of dramas”. The history has been more than 600 years. It is the model of various dramas. In 2001, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation announced 19 extinguishing World Cultural Heritage and Kunqu opera was the first. It shows the importance of Kunqu in history and culture. Nevertheless, over time, modern young people are not familiar with Kunqu opera; the reasons can be in that they do not know Kunqu opera and even neglect it. Thus, it is not one of their leisure activities.

This visit gave us an opportunity to appreciate the instruments, performance, costumes, properties and stage decoration of Kunqu opera. We realize that Kunqu opera is the performing art which is broader than we imagine. It is interesting and we obtain the knowledge. It should be carefully approached and watched. Although Kunqu opera is not as popular in the past, we are impressed by the beauty and it is the treasure of traditional Chinese opera. Finally, we believe that with the efforts of Kunqu opera troupes and actors, Kunqu opera will be popular one day and show the charm. It will be the mainstream of modern art culture. There will be more people who watch Kunqu opera and it will become one of the public’s leisure activities.
