Makeup art of Kunqu Opera is certainly different from daily makeup. Makeup technique of Kunqu Opera is based on male characters’ “handsome makeup” and “painted face” of clown. As to makeup of Kunqu Opera in early times, male characters’ makeup is lighter and they only used the pigments of powder of pollent (white), rouge (red) and soot (black). Nowadays, it becomes “shoe-shaped mouth”. Colors and techniques of makeup depend on the characters’ age, gender, identity and situation. Painted makeup is called facial makeup which is colorful. By paints such as red, yellow, white, black, green, golden and silver, it creates the characters “seven red, eight black, four white, three monk, five poison, six Qiao, two Clown and nine Za” of painted face and clowns of Kunqu Opera.
