By the introduction of director Su-Qiong Ou of Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe, we not only learned about the foundation and efforts of Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe, but also recognized the troupe’s devotion to the innovation of Kunqu Opera in these years. It introduced popular pieces of adapted Kunqu Opera in the tour and Kunqu Opera gradually shows the modern and local characteristics, based on traditional opera.
Foundation of Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe
It was formerly “National Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy”, founded in 1963. It was the only troupe of National Taiwan College of Performing Arts in Taiwan. The troupe frequently represented the country in overseas public performance, including more than 30 countries in five continents, such as Europe, Asia, America, Australia and Africa. They showed national culture, maintained international relationship and entertained the overseas compatriots. As the first Peking and Kunqu Opera troupe with locally cultivated renowned Peking Opera actors and actresses in Taiwan, in order to develop the opportunities of performance, it was named “Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe”. Upon “tradition” and “modern innovation”, it revives Chinese opera development and artistic characteristics in Taiwan. Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera were from the same origin. It aims to cultivate young actors who will master both Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera.

Devotion and Creation of New Opportunities
In recent years, the troupe is devoted to cultural innovation, artistic promotion and local education and upon the mission of inheritance of tradition, innovation and art education, it frequently performs around the country and in the schools, holds the lectures, develops Chinese opera audiences, promotes art teacher education and internship of talents and develops Chinese opera art with subjectivity of Taiwan. Members of the troupe are mostly the excellent graduates of National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. It recruits the talents from different fields to perform remarkable pieces with the mission to glorify and pass on the art of Chinese opera.

Tradition and Innovation Catching up with the Trend
In order to catch up with the time and society, it created new plays based on traditional Chinese opera and combined the concept of modern theatre. Through brand-new directing, it introduced new visual performance and sound effect to the audiences. Thus, in these years, it created great number of remarkable works.

Goal of Excellence Sustainable Operation
Finally, Director Su-Qiong Ou told us with confidence: at present, the troupe makes efforts on sustainable operation of traditional opera. It persists in art quality and constantly introduces new works in order to revive traditional opera, attract more audiences, develop audiences of new generation, reconstruct Chinese opera with characteristics, create the future of traditional opera and glorify the performing art of Kunqu Opera!
