Over time, entertainment becomes more diverse and the people have more options, such as movies, TV, video games and performances of other modern troupes. In addition, traditional Chinese opera cannot compete with modern multimedia and the audiences are reducing. Thus, most of the audiences of traditional Chinese opera are the elderly and there are few young ones. Performances of traditional Chinese opera thus decline and some actors change the career and it lacks the talents. In order to be as vigorous as before and increase the audiences, traditional Chinese opera should be transformed and changed to meet the interests of modern people.

Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe of National Taiwan College of Performing Arts breaks through the convention and attempts to be innovative. It introduces the system of playwright-director, cultivates new actors, enhances the performances, stage settings and properties, applies national music, symphonic music and modern instruments, strengthens the marketing and promotion by multimedia, adapts the scripts or creates the new plays associated with current events and develops different stages with visual and sound effect of technology. Thus, it constructs the model of modern troupe and enhances the attraction of traditional Chinese opera to attract more young audiences.

Finally, we suggest that the culture of traditional Chinese opera is the outcome of the ancestors’ wisdom. It accumulates the performance characteristics through hundred years of creation. It is important local culture and our common memory of life. Hence, traditional Chinese opera should be significantly supported and protected. With the innovation and operation, we believe that Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe can revitalize the traditional performance and result in new opportunities for the development of traditional Chinese opera.
