     Kunqu Opera  band is enormous. The most refers to 34 instruments on civilian and martial art stage. 18 instruments are commonly used. As to Kunqu Opera instruments, besides wind and stringed instruments such as flute, Xiao, suona horn, Pipa, Sanxian and Yueqin, there are percussion instruments such as clappers, big gong and small gong. Flute is the main accompaniment and the sound is soft. Thus, Kunqu music is well-known as “charming and soft”. Musical sections are divided into “big Chui Yue” and “small Chui Yue”; the former is based on big gong and it is used for “Yin Ta tone” (ornaments), holding court trial, offering birthy felicitations, drinking, fighting and ending. The latter is based on Nan Ai (small suona horn) or Ping Xiao which shows the feelings, playfulness, dullness and grief and indignation. The main accompaniments of Kunqu Opera are shown as follows:

flute
Wind instrument. It is classified into two categories: Kun flute which accompanies Kunqu Opera is thick and big and the tone is soft. It is also called“flute of traditional opera”; Bang flute which accompanies Bangzi Opera is short and the tone is strong.

Wind instrument. It is one of the important instruments on the stages of

Kunqu Opera.

Suona horn
Wind instrument, also called “horn”. According to the forms and dimensions, traditional suona horn is classified into big suona horn, medium suona horn and small suona horn. On the stages of Kunqu Opera, small suona horn is commonly used. Tone of suona horn is resounding to show the festive or majestic atmosphere.

Erhu
The tone is tender and soft and it is the major stringed instrument of modern

Kunqu Opera band.

     Sanxian
Plucked instrument. It shows rich tone and it controls the meters. It becomes the main accompaniment on the stages of Kunqu Opera.

Pipa
Plucked instrument. The tone is resounding and expressive. The range is wide. It is one of the important accompaniments of civilian stage ofKunqu Opera.

Ruan
Plucked instrument, called “Yueqin” in ancient time. Modern Ruan is classified into medium and large Ruan. Tone of medium Ruan is peaceful and that of big Ruan is resounding. The accompaniment of Kunqu Opera refers to medium Ruan.

Kun Opera Performance
Take the bamboo Kundi  as the main instrument, with He Sheng, Sanxian, Erhu, Pipa and other traditional stringed and woodwind instruments to compose a beautiful melody. Drum and plank, with percussion instruments such as small gong, big gong, and big cymbal to control the rhythm.

big barrel drum
It is commonly used to create the atmosphere and enhance the climate of war. Big barrel drum is resounding. It is used to enhance the fighting atmosphere, “war drum” in the fighting scenes, or holding of the court trail, discussion of military business and execution ground.

small barrel drum
Small barrel drum is sharp and loud. In Kunqu Opera, it is used as the sound of night watches to create the atmosphere of the quiet night or show the sound the wind, rain, wave, drink and coldness.

big gong
It is often used for fighting scenes and the pieces with old gentleman, Wu Sheng and Wu Dan for strong atmosphere. Big gong is the base of the rhythm in the gong points of traditional opera upon big gong.

small gong
It is divided into high, medium and low tunes, according to different stories and characters. Generally speaking, the tune of fighting scenes is higher and the tone is sharp and loud. The tune of civilian scenes is lower and the tone is slow and elegant.

clapper
It often serves as the direction in instrumental ensemble and accompaniment.

Big cymbal
The tone is sharp and loud and it is one of three major elements with big gong and small gong of percussion music in modern Kunqu Opera band. By the sharp rhythm and various points, it highlights the characters on the stages.

Kun Opera Performance
"civilian and martial art stage" is the accompaniment band of Chinese opera. "civilian" refers to traditional stringed and woodwind instruments, which is responsible for setting off the actor's singing. "martial" refers to percussion instruments, which is responsible for controlling the rhythm of music and drama.
