Traditional Chinese opera is considered to be the leisure activity for the elderly and it is not part of the recreation of the young people. However, during this visit, the marketing manager Tung Po-Shou introduced the performance style, characters of actors, instruments and the actors’ vocal music of traditional Chinese opera. By easy and simple method, we approached the beauty of traditional Chinese opera. Through the presentation of Uncle Tung, we recognized the brilliance of traditional Chinese opera, changed our impression and became interested in traditional Chinese opera.
However, at present, the important task of the troupe is to increase more young audiences. According to the current troupe director, Su-Qiong Ou, since the media make progress, the audiences experience various options of entertainment, such as films, TV and internet. They can watch the drama at home without going out. Sometimes there are more actors on the stage than the audiences. Thus, the essential problems of traditional Chinese opera are the gap of actors and the constant reduction of audiences. Traditional Chinese opera must change the performance style of the troupes. It needs new professional directors to combine the scripts with current events and modern social issues. It should apply technological media in order to approach modern people’s lives and thoughts in order to attract more young audiences.
Director Su-Qiong Ou stated that in recent years, there are some innovations in Kunqu Opera. For instance, 1/2Q theater, based on traditional Kunqu Opera, combines the theater, vision and dance to present creative “new Kunqu Opera”. According to Director Su-Qiong Ou, traditional Chinese opera includes more professional playwrights and directors. Thus, it will develop more diverse creation and enhance the performance and visual effect of traditional Chinese opera. More people will enjoy traditional Chinese opera and it will increase the audiences.
